the engineering design toolkit (EDT) is a research paper writing toolkit
I developed the EDT to aid the process of writing of research papers at the largest research paper symposium in Asia, Korea Scholar's Conference for Youth (KSCY). Embedding the engineering design process, design thinking and human centered design, the EDT helps students 1) experience the process of engineering research in a short time frame and 2) outline the plans for whatever engineering-related research they want to pursue.
The first page of the EDT is where the problem definition comes in. Students brainstorm in order to see which problems they wish to solve, as well as the background knowledge needed to continue on research.
The inner pages of the EDT is where the ideation and direction setting happens. Students utilize parallel thinking where they ideate multiple ideas (up to 6), analyze them, and think more about the theory behind their ideas. Then, after choosing the best ideas of the 6, they utilize forward thinking by developing those ideas further.
The last page is the summarizer of the first three pages. Having gone through the before processes, students define what will be used as the measurement of success as well as thinking about the way forward from this point on.
